March 17: A Story of Father Joseph Lambillotte

The book, The Month of St. Joseph, presents daily considerations for the month of March in the form of meditations and practical examples. The example for today is as follows.

EXAMPLE

Father Joseph Lambillotte, a celebrated musician, was known like his two brothers Louis and Francis, not only for his musical talents, but for his abilities in the education of youth. The good Father was remarkable also for his filial devotion to his patron, St. Joseph. Owing to the feeble state of his health he was obliged to relinquish teaching, and the last three years of his life were passed at St. Acheul, suffering from consumption. In the leisure moments this illness afforded him, he composed the book entitled “The Consoler,” a work full of feeling, and which has been of much service to a great many souls.

In the month of March, 1842, a very serious crisis occurred which alarmed every one. Let us pray much for Father Lambillotte, said the Novice Master, for he is in a very dangerous state; all the same I do not think he will die, for he has asked St. Joseph not to let him die until he had finished writing his book. Before very long the good Father was sufficiently recovered to continue his work, and a Novice was appointed to help him by writing from his dictation. One day he announced that his book was finished; it was then August, and on the 12th the last sheet was placed in the printer’s hands. On the 14th the good Father breathed his last. It was the vigil of the Assumption, and all hoped he would contemplate the next day in Heaven the Immaculate Spouse of his powerful Advocate.

This anecdote comes from the Month of St. Joseph by Abbé Berlioux, originally published in English in the year 1887. This book contains meditations and an example story for each day of the month. In an effort to preserve short inspiring stories from our Catholic past, every day for the month of March you can find the example story for the day published on the website under people/stories.

The same author also published similar books for the months of, May (Our Lady), June (Sacred Heart), and November (Holy Souls). We are planning to post the stories for these months in the future and are working with Mediatrix Press to re-publish these as a four book collection, so be sure to check back. The Month of St. Joseph is available now.
